Mid-State’s Proud Tradition
For more than a century, Mid-State Technical College has grown and adapted to meet the needs of central Wisconsin. From its earliest days of local vocational classes to today’s high-tech training centers, our story is one of progress, resilience, and commitment to our students and communities.
A Vision Takes Shape
In 1911, the Wisconsin Legislature created the system of public vocational schools. This gave communities the chance to develop programs that prepared people for real jobs and stronger futures. Central Wisconsin quickly embraced the new model, and by 1913 schools in Marshfield, Stevens Point, and Wisconsin Rapids were formed. Evening and day classes trained people for trades, industry, and business. This laid the foundation for a century of technical education in our region. It was the start of what would become Mid-State Technical College.

Meet Grit
Grit is Mid-State’s fierce (and fuzzy) cougar mascot. More than a symbol, Grit represents the pride, determination, and courage that define our college community. Just as important, Grit reminds us that even the most independent cougar finds friendship, support, and new skills to grow stronger. Yes, Grit is fierce in spirit but always ready with encouragement. Every high-five, hug, and campus appearance from Grit is a reminder that we’re strongest when we face challenges head-on—together.
Want to help us embody our mascot’s infectious energy? We’re always looking for dynamic Grit actors to slide into cougar character and spread the spirit of Mid-State.
