Credit for Prior Learning & Experience

You’ve already gained valuable knowledge through work, military service, or other learning experiences—why not get credit for it? At Mid-State, you can save money on tuition and books and graduate faster by turning your real-world experience into college credit.

The credit for prior learning process allowed me to carry fewer credits during my final semester.

Ways to Get Credit

You may be closer to your degree than you think! Mid-State offers several ways to earn credit for what you already know.

If you’ve taken college classes before, you may be able to earn transfer credit for that work. Mid-State’s Credit for Prior Learning team can help you make the most of what you’ve already achieved.

Your courses may transfer if:

  • They appear on an official college transcript.
  • The course matches Mid-State’s content and rigor.
  • You earned a grade of “C” or higher.

See What Transfers with Transferology

Transferology is a free online tool that helps you see how your completed (or planned) courses transfer to Mid-State. It’s a quick and easy way to find out which credits may count toward your degree.

How to use Transferology:

  1. Go to the Transferology website.
  2. Create an account with your email and password.
  3. Select “Will My Courses Transfer?”
  4. Search for your college and courses, then click “Search for Matches.”
  5. You’ll see Mid-State course numbers next to any matching credits.

If your school or course isn’t listed, don’t worry—it may still transfer! You’ll just need an official evaluation.

Request a Credit Transfer Evaluation

The best way to confirm what transfers is through an official evaluation. Mid-State can review your past coursework once we receive your official college transcripts.

To request your official transcripts:

  • Visit your previous college or university’s website for instructions.
  • If sending an electronic copy, use cpl@mstc.edu.
  • If mailing a paper copy, send it to:
    Attn: CPL
    Mid-State Technical College
    1001 Centerpoint Dr.
    Stevens Point, WI 54481

This process includes a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)—a chance to “show what you know.” The type of assessment depends on the course, and each option is determined by Mid-State’s faculty.

Assessment Types and Fees

  • Skill Demonstration – Show a hands-on skill to an instructor: $90
  • Portfolio or Extended Response – Submit documents showing your mastery of course skills, or complete an extended-response exam: $90
  • Challenge Exam – Take a multiple-choice test that’s automatically graded: $50
  • Combination – Use a mix of these methods: $90

You can view the full list of courses with a work/life experience PLA to see which ones may fit your background.
