Discover Japan through hands-on learning, local exploration, and guided experiences led by Mid-State Social Sciences Instructor Jon Steele, who has lived, traveled, and taught in Japan. The required pre-trip class prepares you with valuable cultural context, basic language skills, and an understanding of Japan’s customs and etiquette.

Free time is built in for you to explore, shop, or simply relax. You might even find yourself singing karaoke with new friends!

Osaka – The Nation’s Kitchen

  • Explore Osaka Castle and its scenic park grounds.
  • Step back in time at the Osaka Museum of History and the Museum of Housing and Living.
  • Wander through Dotonbori’s famous neon-lit streets and try local delicacies.
  • Take a day trip to Nara, home to the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple and the friendly deer of Nara Park.

Kyoto – Where Tradition Meets Tranquility

  • Visit renowned temples and shrines such as Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari.
  • Experience the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
  • Explore the historic Gion district, home to geishas and teahouses.
  • Participate in a traditional tea ceremony, learning the art and mindfulness.
