Program Waitlists

Why Waitlists?

Some Mid-State programs fill quickly because of high interest, limited lab or clinical space, or accreditation requirements. When this happens, we use a waitlist to place students in open seats in a fair and consistent way.

In addition to Mid-State’s own process, parts of the admission and waitlist steps follow statewide rules for Wisconsin’s technical colleges (TCS 10). These rules help make sure students across the state have fairness, consistency, and equal access. They guide things like the order students are placed on a waitlist, which often depends on when admission steps are finished and whether a student is a Wisconsin resident.

Why Some Programs Have Waitlists

Several Mid-State programs regularly reach capacity—most often those with clinical, lab, or specialized equipment requirements.

Common reasons programs may have a waitlist:

  • High student demand
  • Restricted clinical or placement availability
  • Accreditation or licensing requirements
  • Instructor-to-student ratio limits
  • Specialized facility or lab space constraints

Examples of programs that may experience waitlists include Dental Hygienist, Nursing, and Radiography. (Actual programs vary each semester.)

How Waitlists at Mid-State Work

When a program reaches capacity, these steps occur:

  1. Qualified applicants are placed on a waitlist in the order their application steps are completed.
  2. Students are moved into the program as seats become available.
  3. Admissions notifies students immediately when a space opens.

Waitlist movement can occur when:

  • Students change schedules.
  • Students complete outstanding requirements.
  • Class capacity increases or sections are added.
  • Pre-semester enrollment shifts.

Your Waitlist Status

Being on a waitlist means the following:

  • You meet the admission requirements.
  • The program is currently full.
  • You will be offered a seat as soon as one becomes available.

It does not mean you should delay your next steps or stop preparing.

While You Wait

You can continue to make progress toward your goals while you wait for a seat to open.

Recommended actions:

  • Complete general education courses.
  • Finalize placement testing or submit transcripts.
  • Meet with an advisor.
  • File the FAFSA.
  • Explore related programs or alternative pathways.

Taking these steps early helps ensure you’re ready to begin as soon as your spot becomes available.

Note: Recommendations may differ for shared programs (offered in partnership with another college). Speak with your advisor about limited seat availability, financial aid implications, and specific program structures relevant to your situation.

Explore Related Programs

Students often explore similar or connected programs while waiting for their first-choice option. Some programs share coursework or offer parallel career paths.
